Il y a quelque chose d’intrigant dans la pochette de l’album “Unknown Pleasures” de Joy Division (1979). On attribue souvent cette image à Peter Saville, designer pour le label Factory Records à l’époque de la sortie de l’album, mais il n’a fait que mettre en blanc sur noir un dessin déjà paru dans le Scientific American, une dizaine d’années plus tôt.
I was lucky enough to attend the tribute concert to his father Alla Rakha in february 2001 in Bombay. It was the first time I’d seen Zakir Hussain play live. I then attended a few other concerts in France, and each time was a spellbinding experience to see him play incredible rhythms with an ecstatic smile of joy. The last time was in Lyon on november 2022… Holy cow, what a maestro we lost.
Running the Hungarian algorithm in Max to unravel graph edges. I hadn’t realized this was a non-trivial optimization problem when I started this thing.
[edit] It has proved useful for visualizing the activity of thousands of neurons, in the Brain Orchestra project.

Many researchers, artists and makers from many different countries, different cultures and backgrounds meeting at NIME 2019 in Porto-Alegre, giving rise to very rich discussions! From science and engineering to musical performance to anthropology to music history (and more, and vice versa). Really happy that I could present my paper on “ephemeral instruments” in such a rich and stimulating context !
